Before delving into the top causes of heavy menstrual bleeding there is one question asked by many women that needs to be addressed, and this question is: How can a woman tell when bleeding during her period is abnormally heavy?
To begin with abnormal or heavy bleeding during menstrual periods is medically referred to as Menorrhagia.
Now, in order for a woman to find out if she is having menorrhagia or heavy menstrual bleeding, the woman needs to study her bleeding carefully and take note how often she changes her sanitary pad or tampon. If the bleeding from the menstruation is severe enough to cause the woman to change her tampon or pad more often than usual say every thirty minutes to an hour, or if your bleeding lasts more than a week, then it goes without saying that the woman is experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding or menorrhagia.
According to health professionals, these are the top causes of heavy menstrual bleeding in most women all over the world:
• Uterine fibroid tumors – these fibroid tumors are one of the hugest causes of heavy menstrual bleeding in most women. These fibroid tumors often occur in the uterus of women when they attain the ages of thirty and forty. Health experts say that fibroid tumors if not treated can remain in a woman until she attains menopause or even beyond. Doctors till today still do not know what actually causes these uterine fibroid tumors but they can be treated surgically and non-surgically. Since uterine fibroid tumor is a huge causer of heavy menstrual bleeding, treating it will control a woman’s heavy menstrual bleeding if only the severe bleeding is caused by the uterine fibroid.
• Hormonal imbalance – the imbalance of the hormones during the female’s adolescent ages and menopause ages is probably the leading cause of severe menstrual bleeding in many girls and women today. What happens is that during adolescence after the time some girls get their first periods, their hormone levels tend to fluctuate and this often results in one thing - a severe or heavy uterine bleeding during their menstruation period. Doctors say that the same situation can occur in some women several years prior to their menopause – which is when menstruation ceases. Since in this situation too there is also a huge fluctuating in the hormone levels of every woman, women tend to experience serious uterine bleeding during their periods. According to health professionals, excessive menstrual bleeding as a result of a hormonal imbalance can be treated with a simple thing as birth control pills.
• Cervical Cancer – this is another contributor to heavy menstrual bleeding. Cervical cancer occurs in the cervix and forces the cells there to grow abnormal and multiply. Doctors say that the major cause of cervical cancer in any woman is as a result of the HPV (Human Pappiloma Virus). Cervical cancer is very dangerous and deadly. But it can be easily treated with chemotherapy, surgery or even radiation therapy.
• PID – Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is another major cause of heavy menstrual bleeding. PID as it is normally called is an infection that attacks three main organs in a woman namely: the uterus, cervix and the fallopian tubes. There are several ways by which a woman can get pelvic inflammatory disease. The major thing that would make a woman to suffer from PID is when the woman has gone through things like abortion or childbirth. PID is a sexually transmitted disease. One of the easiest and simplest ways to treat PID is through antibiotic therapy.
